My pops was your classic “meat and potatoes” guy; if something hadn’t waddled, lumbered, or swam before ending up on his plate, he wasn’t interested.

Pops was not what you would call a healthy eater; the man could put away a steak or a slab of prime rib in no time, and his homemade burgers were always the most decadent. I was, of course, pulled into his nutritional orbit. While my mother would encourage apples or a piece of whole wheat toast for a snack, Pops would give me his gas card to run into the mart and get whatever I wanted; chocolate milk and a big grab bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, every time.

When just the two of us were home, he would always whip up his famous homemade milkshakes. Out would come the old Osterizer blender with the frayed cord, and my glee would kick into high gear. He taught me that you don’t make a chocolate milkshake with chocolate ice cream; you use vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, that way you get the best of both flavors.

He’d use his special frosted cocktail glasses to serve up these ice cream dreams, and I quickly learned that the best milkshakes are always homegrown!

Is a Mint Chocolate Chip Milkshake Healthy?

Milkshakes are not for the diet-conscious, with this mint chocolate chip milkshake packing a wallop of sugar and dairy. However, almond milk, coconut milk, or any other milk alternative that you enjoy could replace the high-fat whole milk in this recipe, and tone down the belt-busting nature of this dreamy dessert. Also, shop around because some brands of chocolate syrup are organic, have less sugar, or do not use corn syrup.

mint chocolate chip: a stone cold classic (literally)

Formerly an eggnog drink mixed with whiskey designed to cure one’s ills, milkshakes came into their modern form around 1900 and were turbocharged in 1910 when the Hamilton Beach Company introduced its Cyclone Drink Mixer. From then on, technology kept advancing milkshakes further and further with freon-cooled refrigerators, the Multimixer Milkshake Maker, and home-use blenders, reaching the zenith of their popularity in the diners of the 1950s.

Mint chocolate chip was a flavor on Baskin-Robbins’ opening day roster of thirty one ice cream flavors in 1945, back when crème de menthe was used to provide the mint flavoring. Nowadays, peppermint or spearmint flavoring is used.

A beloved favorite, mint chocolate chip was voted the fourth most popular ice cream flavor in the USA and, bizarrely enough, the Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh ordered two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream for his last meal before he was executed in 2001.

FAQs & Tips

How to Make Ahead and Store

Milkshakes will melt in the fridge, so they need to be kept in the freezer. However, doing this will make them lose their milkshake consistency, and they’ll freeze into more of an ice cream texture. My recommendation is to just pull the blender out and make these to order on the spot!

choco-holics take note

Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup is a classic, but if you’re chocolate crazy and really crave the richness, go for broke and make your own hot fudge to use in place of the syrup. Check out this Chocolate Fondue recipe for a similar level of decadence!

Can I make this recipe vegan?

While I haven’t tried it myself, there are so many great dairy-free products out there nowadays! I’ve already mentioned substituting the milk for your favorite dairy-free alternative, and you can couple it with your favorite dairy-free whipped cream and mint chocolate chip ice cream. Also double-check the chocolate sauce and chocolate chips to make sure they’re both vegan-friendly!
